Please note that performances must be acoustic, and played between 9am and 9pm. No amplification is allowed.
How to apply for a permit
- Contact Event Services to check suitability.
- Complete an application form and provide the following supporting documentation:
- Proof of identity with current address for each performer. For example, a driver’s licence.
- Current photo of each performer.
- Written permission from a parent or guardian if a busker under 16 years old.
What is considered "Busking"?
“Busking” describes performing in public places. It includes the below performance types:
- Singing and/or use of musical instruments
- conjuring
- juggling
- mime and mimicry
- puppetry
- performance art
- recitation
- dance
- other theatrical and visual forms.

6 month permit | $30 |
12 month permit | $55 |
A card payment fee applies.
Renewing a permit
When your busking permit expires you will need to reapply and pay the permit fee.

Your permit covers the City of Port Phillip. Please see the guidelines for more details about location restrictions.

St Kilda Festival | Busking during the St Kilda Festival requires a separate permit. Contact St Kilda Festival directly for more information. |
South Melbourne Market | Busking is no longer allowed inside the South Melbourne Market. Permit holders can busk in specific spots outside the Market on Cecil and Coventry Streets. For more information, visit the South Melbourne Market website. |
St Kilda Esplanade Market | Busking at the St Kilda Esplanade Market needs approval from the Market Management team. |
