Welcoming Cities
In 2022 the City of Port Phillip joined the Welcoming Cities network and signed a commitment to the Welcoming Cities Standard.
Welcoming Cities, an initiative of Welcoming Australia, is a national network of municipalities committed to an Australia where everyone can participate in social, cultural, economic and civic life. Welcoming Cities supports local councils to become more welcoming and inclusive of their diverse communities.
Welcoming Cities sets a national standard for cultural diversity, inclusion policy and practice in local government, helping to create communities where everyone can belong. There are over 250 member municipalities across the world with 51 in Australia.
In 2023 Welcoming Australia was one of ten global grassroots initiatives named as recipients of the prestigious Intercultural Innovation Hub. A partnership between the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) and the BMW Group, the Intercultural Innovation Hub recognizes and supports grassroots initiatives that promote intercultural dialogue and understanding, and contribute to peace, cultural diversity, and inclusive societies.
