Residents and traders can also use the City of Port Phillip’s Near Me map feature to search their address and confirm whether they will need parking permits in 2024 based on whether there will be any changes to parking controls in their street.
In response to issues raised by the community about previous traffic management during the GP, we trialled a new approach in 2022. This involved replacing the previously used barriers around Middle Park and Albert Park with temporary parking restrictions, designed to prevent Grand Prix visitors from occupying parking spaces in the local area.
To measure the success of this trial, City of Port Phillip worked with Global Research and the AGPC to produce an evaluation report. This assessment drew on targeted community engagement as well as traffic and parking occupancy surveys, conducted both prior to and during the event.
Nine key recommendations to further minimise impact to the local community were put forward in the final evaluation report. All these recommendations were endorsed by Council on Wednesday 7 September 2022.
Visit 2022 Meetings and Agendas to access details from the 7 September 2022 Council Meeting and the full Evaluation Report.
Residents and businesses can use our Near Me maps feature to verify whether their property is eligible for a Temporary Parking Permit.
Please Contact Us if you are eligible but have not yet received a permit.
In some instances, a property may require more than two temporary parking permits.
Additional parking permits can be requested by contacting ASSIST on 03 9209 6777. Find out other ways to get in contact by visiting our Contact Us page.
No permits are required to drive through the area, or to park for up to 90 minutes. These temporary parking restrictions are designed to prevent Grand Prix visitors from occupying parking spaces long-term in local streets.
The Grand Prix has taken place at Albert Park since 1996. In previous years, physical barricades were constructed around parts of St Kilda West, Middle Park, Albert Park and South Melbourne in order to restrict event visitors from accessing these areas in their vehicles.
This approach is no longer deemed necessary as a large proportion of this area has moved to permanent parking restrictions over the years. Previously, parking had been largely unrestricted.
Council heard from community that the barricades had created issues including:
- people moving the barricades to access the area
- visitors not being able to access residences and shops
- taxi services not being able to get into the area
- concerns around proper checking of permits for access to the affected area
- challenges with traffic movement for local residents.
You can request a parking officer to investigate a suspected illegally parked vehicle between the hours of 6 am and 11 pm, seven days a week by contacting Council or lodging your request online through your My Port Phillip account.
This applies across the City of Port Phillip throughout the year – not only during the Grand Prix.
The contractors installing the temporary parking signage are following relevant standards and detailed drawings and plans which have been approved by Council engineers.
If there are key locations of concerns, please let us know so that we can assess these locations. Find out how to get in contact by visiting our Contact Us page. We encourage residents to let us know the exact location and issue they are observing to ensure we can follow up the matter promptly, keeping the area safe for everyone.
Permits will be mailed out to all eligible properties in the weeks before the event with a note reminding users not to copy or on-sell their permits.
Permits are designed so that they are hard to replicate.
Enforcement officers will be on the lookout for any evidence of tampering or copying permits and will enforce parking controls as needed.
In response to feedback received from the community last year, Council are working with AGPC to install temporary 90 minute parking signs using standard steel face plates in key streets within the Local Parking Area. These are much harder to remove and tamper with than the overlay stickers that were previously used. In streets where only minor changes will be made to existing restrictions, some stickers will continue to be used.
Council is working with the Australian Grand Prix Corporation to manage transport impacts during the Grand Prix. In response to feedback received from the community last year, we have worked with the AGPC to have dedicated space set aside for shared mobility parking to minimise safety and amenity issues.
Operators will be on-site throughout the event to respond promptly to any issues.
E-scooters are not permitted on footpaths or on roads where there is a speed limit above 50 km/h. As part of the Victorian Government trial on e-scooters, the City of Port Phillip will continue to work with the Department of Transport and Planning, Victoria Police and other councils to ensure safety and amenity remain key priorities. Victoria Police is the enforcement agency of road rules, including the riding of e-scooters on footpaths.
