Hundreds of volunteers hit the streets and beaches this Clean Up Australia Day
Just a handful of the volunteers that worked hard to make our City even better on Clean Up Australia Day.
Those participating in the events combed pockets of our foreshore, beach, parks and streets – diligently removing litter, including everything from lolly wrappers to cigarette butts to plastic bottles. Thanks to these volunteers, this litter was prevented from causing further harm to our environment.
At the Council-run event, participants collected almost 43 kg of waste and recyclable material – plus 85 beverage containers that are eligible for Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme (CDS Vic). The breakdown of materials collected included:
- 9.45 kg of recyclable content
- 30.5 kg of general waste
- 3.2 kg of glass (for example, wine bottles)
- 85 Victorian Container Deposit Scheme eligible containers like plastic drinking bottles and aluminium cans.
Volunteer all year round
Several of our volunteer groups including Beach Patrol and Love Our Streets ran events on the day, and both organisations are passionate about removing litter from our City all year round.
Clean Up Australia Day may only happen once a year, but if you’re passionate about keeping our gorgeous city's streets, parks and beaches clean, you may be interested in joining one of these community groups who do this on a regular basis. They are also a great way to meet people and to get to know an area within Port Phillip.
Beach Patrol
Beach Patrol Australia is a network of beach clean-up groups centred around Port Phillip Bay – stretching from Geelong to Rye. There are five Beach Patrol groups in Port Phillip: St Kilda, Elwood, South Melbourne, Albert Park and Port Melbourne. Visit the Beach Patrol website to learn more and get involved.
Love Our Street
Love Our Street is the neighbourhood version of Beach Patrol – they support Beach Patrol by addressing litter where it often starts. Once a month, they meet at local shopping streets or open spaces for a clean-up and a cuppa afterwards. They have four groups in Port Phillip: Elwood, Balaclava / Ripponlea, South Melbourne and Port Melbourne. To learn more and get involved, visit the Love Our Street website.
Clean-Up Australia Day is currently the largest annual environmental campaign in Australia. We’re very grateful to all volunteers who came – including those who travelled from suburbs outside our City to take part. We look forward to next year’s event.
