The next steps for the St Kilda Triangle
The results of recent consultation showed a majority of the community support the plan, while a market sounding report found supply gaps in Melbourne’s live music industry, with unmet demand for a flexible live music and performance venue.
There is support from the Fitzroy Street Business Association and the Acland Street Traders Association with the view that a new venue would activate the site, providing a flow-on effect of economic benefits for restaurants, cafés and other businesses nearby.
There is strong industry support for a new purpose-built venue with a capacity of 5000 people in Melbourne, and particularly in St Kilda. This is due to the suburb’s enviable amenity and bayside backdrop, central location with easy access to public transport and longstanding reputation as an entertainment and live music precinct.
The idea of a new live music and performance venue has now been tested through the St Kilda Triangle site feasibility, market demand, community and industry consultation and found to be an opportunity worth pursuing.
Given the regional significance of the site and the civic nature of the project, progressing from an idea to implementation would rely heavily on strong engagement and support from the Victorian Government.
Councillors will discuss three different options at the 6 December Council Meeting on how to progress the project, including working with the Victorian Government to support the next stage of the project.
The St Kilda Triangle proposal reflects the spirit and intent of the 2016 Masterplan for the site and is aligned with the Triangle’s history as the past home of the Palais de Danse dance hall, Palace Nightclub and other entertainment venues.
It aligns with Council’s decision to declare St Kilda as Victoria’s first Live Music Precinct in June.
Quotes to be attributed to Hunters & Collectors musician and St Kilda resident Jack Howard:
The idea of the Triangle being transformed into a dedicated live music centre with a brilliant new venue is terrific and would be a great result for St Kilda. I look forward to playing there. Bring it on.
Over the last year or so, it feels like St Kilda has been re-invigorated as a live music hub, especially with its new Live Music Precinct status. There’s a growing list of venues with great sound, good quality acts and new festivals popping up. As a long-time local musician, it’s exciting to witness.
