Why are we doing this?
As outlined in our latest Street Tree Planting program, Canterbury Road and Ferrars Street have low levels of tree canopy cover and are therefore a priority for greening in Port Phillip.
Meanwhile, the Metro Tunnel Project tree planting program has offered the City of Port Phillip an opportunity to increase the number of trees along these streets. This is because the construction of Anzac Railway Station (located within our City) involved the removal of vegetation. Now, 150 tree planting sites have been identified for new trees. Initial tree planting plus a two-year period of tree maintenance will be funded by the Metro Tunnel Project.

New tree species
The trees will be a mixture of Ulmus ‘Frontier’ (for in-road plots) and Zelkova serrata ‘Wireless’ (for nature strips). These trees have been selected for their climate resilience and form. And as members of the elm tree family, they will work well with the existing dominant elm theme along the roadway.
Tree maintenance
As part of project planning, the 604 existing trees along the roadway were assessed by an independent arborist. The assessment and review by Council arborists identified approximately 25 trees that are either dead or in irreversible decline.
To ensure road and pedestrian safety, these trees will be removed and replaced while the new trees are being planted. Council will cover the cost of tree removals as these works are required as part of standard tree maintenance works.
To learn more about these specific tree removals, see Canterbury Road and Ferrars Street tree removals information.
The impact
During tree planting into the in-road plots there may be some temporary lane closures along Canterbury Road and Ferrars Street tree planting sites.
Disruptions to traffic will be kept to a minimum. No complete road closures are anticipated.
Objectives
- Improve tree canopy cover along Canterbury Road and Ferrars Street.
- Create a cohesive planting palette along the roadway with a dominant elm theme.
- Work with other government organisations to deliver a cost-effective planting outcome for residents.
