A guide to the upcoming Election Period

Published 3 September 2024
Ahead of the 2024 local government elections, Council will enter caretaker – also known as the Election Period.

Caretaker starts at midday Tuesday 17 September and continues until 6 pm on election day, which falls on Saturday 26 October 2024.

During this time, Council must comply with special arrangements in accordance with the Local Government Act 2020. For more information, view the Election Period Policy.

The purpose of caretaker

Caretaker ensures that council actions don't interfere with the election process, and the election process is conducted in an ethical, fair and equitable way. Caretaker also safeguards the authority of the incoming Council.

Council activity during the election period

During the Election Period councils are prohibited from making certain types of decisions. The material produced by councils must not contain matter that will affect voting at the election.

In this time there will be a reduction in the amount of content distributed by Council channels, including e-newsletters and on social media.
