About Floods and Severe Storms

Flooding

The Bureau of Meteorology provides current and up to date information relating to flood warnings in the State of Victoria.

Current warnings can be found here at the Victoria Flood Warning Warning Summary.

For information about what you can do in a flood situation please read the brochures provided at the Flood Watch Website.

Flood Watch is a service provided by the Bureau of Meteorology to notify the Victorian community of the potential flood threat from a developing weather situation. It is an enhancement and replacement to the Flood Advice service previously provided by the Bureau.

How will Flood Watch work?
Normally, the Bureau would issue a Flood Watch 24 to 36 hours in advance of any likely flooding and issue updates as required. If at any time during this period there is a imminent threat of floods occurring, the Flood Watch will be upgraded to a Flood Warning. Flood Warnings are firm predictions of flooding based on actual rainfall measurements and streamflow based models of catchment behaviour that take account of likely future rainfall. Flood Watches are based on meteorological forecasts and current catchment wetness only. If, the weather situation doesn’t develop as anticipated and it becomes clear there is no further danger of floods occurring, the Flood Watch will be finalised.

Further information can be obtained from Emergency Management Australia or the Victorian SES

Severe Storms

Storms can happen anywhere at anytime of the year and are the most frequent emergencies affecting Victorians. Storms can be accompanied by torrential rain, strong winds, large hailstones and lightning.

Storms may result in flash flooding, un-roofing of buildings, damage to trees and powerlines and can pose a significant safety risk to people, animals, households and businesses. Recent storms have resulted in hundreds of millions of dollars in damage.

You can prepare now by following the advice below
1. Develop a home or business emergency plan
2. Assemble an emergency kit
3. Clean your gutters, downpipes and drains and ensure they are in good order and not blocked.
4. Trim over hanging branches
5. Make sure your roof is in good repair
6. Tidy your yard and veranda to ensure unsecured items do not become potential missiles

The City of Port Phillip has worked with the State Emergency Services (SES) and others to prepare an online toolkit to help our residents prepare for and stay safe in severe storms, floods and other harsh weather conditions.
