Parents of Port Phillip Forum Series

Published 10 February 2012

Teenage years present many challenges for both parents and teenagers that are best tackled with the right tools and knowledge.

To assist, the City of Port Phillip, in partnership with Elwood College, will hold a series of free information sessions for local parents to address a raft of issues including cyber bullying, binge drinking, peer pressure and how to talk to young people about drugs and alcohol.

Mayor Cr Rachel Powning says the sessions will give parents some useful tools to help support their teenagers.

“The role of parenting is complex. Often we feel ill-equipped to deal with the types of issues that face our children and their friends. Issues such as anxiety, depression, binge drinking and bullying are a reality for many young people and the role of the parent is essential to healthy development.

“We want parents to feel confident and have the right information at their fingertips from leading experts in their field.

“The City of Port Phillip and Elwood College are delighted to present this series of free forums to make it accessible for local parents to attend. We want to ensure young people are valued and supported by their families, schools and community and it’s great to see Elwood College leading this progressive community education initiative.”

The information sessions follow the very successful forum held last year with renowned psychologist Dr Michael Carr-Gregg.

Bookings are open now. Contact Elwood College on 9531 9566 or email elwood.co@edumail.vic.gov.au
